Pollution is the introduction of harmful materials into the environment. These harmful materials are called pollutants. There are different types of pollution like air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, land pollution etc.
Water pollution can be defined as the introduction of pollutants into the water bodies like rivers, lakes, seas, oceans, groundwater etc. due to human activities. Water is called a life-giving liquid because without water there would be no life on earth. Just like the other living organisms, we also need to consume water to survive. We also need water for many other activities such as cleaning, washing, cooking and irrigation. But water is getting polluted day by day in different ways. Mills and factories pollute water by releasing toxic chemicals and waste products into the nearest water source without treating them. Farmers use pesticides and fertilizers for their crops which get mixed with water in rivers, canals and ponds. Humans pollute water by throwing waste into it. Water vehicles pollute river water by dumping oil, food waste and human waste into it.
There are many bad effects of water pollution. Polluted water is very harmful for health. By drinking impure water, many people often suffer from many diseases like typhoid, malaria, cancer etc. Polluted water also destroys fish and plants by decreasing the amount of oxygen in the water bodies. Waste water and sewage are by-products of daily life activities like using soap, toilets and detergents. Such sewage contains chemicals and bacteria which are harmful to human life and environmental health.
Therefore, proper measures should be taken to prevent water pollution. Disposal of human and industrial wastes in ponds and rivers should be avoided. The use of pesticides in agriculture should be reduced. More plants and trees should be planted to prevent pesticides and fertilizers from running into nearby water sources.
As we know, there is no life without water. We have to keep the water clean. If everyone follows their responsibility to protect water from getting polluted then it will be easy to get clean and healthy drinking water.
