Holi festival is one of the major festivals celebrated in India. Holi is celebrated through out the nation with great pomp and show. Every year it is celebrated on the full moon day of Phalgun month (March). Holi is also termed as "the festival of colors". People celebrate Holi by throwing colors, dancing and embracing each other to forgive each other of all the negative emotions among them. Holi connects all of us and fills the colors of love and affection in our relationships. 

Holi is celebrated with enthusiasm not only by Hindus but also by people of all communities. On Holi, People prepare special dishes such as papad, gujiya, halwa etc. Religious ceremony like "Holika Dahan" and Phalguna songs are also performed during the festival day of Holi.

In ancient times, there was a devil named Hiranyakashyap. He had a son named Prahlad who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Hiranyakashyap was a self-proclaimed god and wanted people in his kingdom to worship him instead of the almighty God. But his son, Prahlad, refused to worship his father. Offended by his son's refusal, Hiranyakashyap tried to kill Prahlad. In order to accomplish this he sought help from his evil sister Holika as she had the blessing of not burning in the fire. Holika tricked Prahlad to sit in fire with her, however, Lord Vishnu blessed Prahlad right on time and he escaped the fire while but Holika got burned in it. Thus Holi is a symbol of the victory of good over evil.

Even today people light up bonfire at night and burns Holika and the next day everyone plays Holi by applying and throwing colors at each other. People wear white clothes and entertain themselves with colors, water balloons and water guns. They dance all day and enjoy a ceremonial drink called “Bhaang”.  Holi is a festival that spreads happiness, love and brotherhood. The festival of Holi brings happiness and harmony in India and other countries where it is celebrated. The festival of Holi has become the symbol of unity and integrity in India and has been a festival that removes all sorts of negativity from people.
